Ultra-Large Digital Narrative &
Poetry Research Project • 2022-ongoing
PI: Dr. Jason Nelson. Other investigators: Dr. Alinta Krauth | Portfolio > Digital writing
Project Details
Work titles:
”Ultralarge 1: Machine City” · ”Ultralarge 2: Mechanical Treehouse” · ”Edge Species” · and others.
These works explore how AI can be used to create new forms of digital writing. The process is called Ultra
Large Digital Narratives or ULDN. These animated and interactive works create complex and interwoven worlds,
with organic creatures and fantastic machines, where snippets of stories emerge over the visual display.
The artists, Dr. Jason Nelson and Dr. Alinta Krauth (The Center for Digital Narrative and EphemerLab), have
developed new creative processes that partly exploit the anticipatory and painterly possibilities of new AI
technologies. The artists' process moves far beyond the simple "ask and generate" methods used by most AI art
engines today. Instead, Nelson and Krauth's experiences are built from hundreds of individual image fragments and
components, which are stitched together into visual and narrative concepts.
